View Service →Copyright protection and copyright registration are related, but they are not the same thing. A qualifying original work can receive copyright protection without registration. Registration creates an official record in the Register of Copyrights and can strengthen the evidence available when ownership, licensing, assignment or infringement later becomes disputed.
Under Pakistan's Copyright Ordinance, an author, publisher, owner or other person interested in copyright may apply to have particulars of a work entered in the Register of Copyrights. A certificate of registration can serve as prima facie evidence that copyright subsists in the work and that the person identified in the certificate is the owner, subject to the facts and any contrary evidence.
Our Pakistan copyright practice supports local creators as well as foreign companies, publishers, software businesses and international rights owners whose works are distributed, licensed, published or commercially used in Pakistan.

Copyright can cover a broad range of original expression. The correct registration category and supporting material depend on the nature of the work and the rights being claimed.
Books, articles, manuals, course material, research, scripts, reports and other original written expression.
Computer programs and related original expression, subject to a careful review of authorship and ownership.
Artwork, illustrations, graphics, drawings and other qualifying visual works, with additional procedural requirements where applicable.
Original audiovisual works such as films, educational productions, animations and commercial video content.
Musical compositions, recordings and related rights material where the applicable ownership and work category are identified correctly.
Original photographs and qualifying digital creative assets used in publishing, marketing, ecommerce or online platforms.
A reliable filing process begins before the form is submitted. The work category, applicant identity, authorship, ownership chain and supporting material should be checked first so the official record does not create avoidable inconsistencies.
Confirm what is being registered and whether it should be treated as one work or several separate works.
Check the author, applicant and owner details, including any assignment, employment or collaboration documents.
Prepare the required particulars, declarations, samples and supporting documents for the relevant work category.
The Copyright Rules contain procedural requirements involving other interested persons and additional steps for artistic works.
Where an objection or administrative question arises, the filing record and supporting evidence may need clarification.
Keep the certificate and supporting ownership documents together for licensing, assignment, due diligence and enforcement use.
The Copyright Rules contain an additional publication requirement for an application to register an artistic work. This means an artistic-work filing should not simply be treated as identical to every other copyright category. Current procedural practice, the proposed work, interested parties and the supporting material should be checked when the application is prepared.
Digital products often contain several different rights at the same time. A software business may have computer code, written documentation, graphics, video, website content, databases, trademarks and contract rights. A copyright registration strategy should therefore identify the specific work being registered rather than describing an entire digital business as a single copyright asset.
Where brand names, logos or domain identity also matter, combine the copyright analysis with trademark searching, trademark registration or domain name protection as appropriate.
Pakistan is a party to the Berne Convention, and international copyright questions can involve treaty protection in addition to Pakistan's domestic law. Foreign creators and companies should still assess the Pakistan-specific ownership, evidence and enforcement position because copyright remains territorial in operation even where international treaties coordinate minimum standards and national treatment.
If your work is created or first published abroad but is licensed, distributed, copied or commercially used in Pakistan, we can review whether a Pakistan registration, ownership record or enforcement strategy would add practical value.
The Copyright Ordinance states that the Register of Copyrights is prima facie evidence of the particulars entered in it, and a registration certificate is prima facie evidence that copyright subsists and that the person shown as owner is the owner. That does not make registration conclusive in every dispute, but it can materially improve the documentary record.

The term of copyright depends on the category of work. For many published literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works other than photographs, the Copyright Ordinance provides protection through the life of the author and for fifty years calculated from the beginning of the calendar year following the year in which the author dies. Different statutory rules can apply to other categories, so a single duration should not be assumed for every work.
Filing before checking employment, assignment, commissioning or contributor agreements can create ownership inconsistencies.
Software products, websites and media portfolios can contain multiple separate works that need individual analysis.
Registration is evidence and record-building; it should not be described as the legal event that creates all copyright rights.
Missing source files, publication history, author records or ownership contracts can create problems when rights are later challenged.
There is no reliable one-price or one-timeline answer for every copyright filing. The work category, number of separate works, ownership complexity, supporting documents, required procedural steps, objections and the level of professional assistance can all affect the matter.
For an accurate scope, provide the work type, author and owner details, whether the work has been published, and whether any assignment, employment, commissioning or collaboration arrangement applies. We can then identify the likely filing work before quoting professional assistance.
We focus on who created the work, who owns the rights and what documents support that position before filing.
The filing is considered alongside licensing, assignments, publishing, investment and future commercial use.
International creators and businesses receive a Pakistan-specific review without implying that one registration creates worldwide rights.
If infringement occurs, registration records can be assessed together with source files, publication history and other evidence.
These answers cover common filing, ownership and international-client questions. Specific cases should be reviewed on their own facts.
No. Copyright can arise automatically when a qualifying original work is created, and registration is not generally a condition for copyright to exist. Registration is still useful because the Register of Copyrights and a registration certificate can provide prima facie evidence of the particulars recorded and of the registered owner.
Registration creates an official record in the Register of Copyrights. It can strengthen evidence of authorship, ownership and the existence of the work, which may be useful for licensing, assignments, commercial transactions and infringement disputes.
Foreign creators and rights owners may have copyright interests in Pakistan depending on the applicable law, treaty protection and ownership facts. A Pakistan-specific review is useful before filing so the applicant, author, owner and supporting documents are stated correctly.
Copyright can be relevant to computer programs and other original literary, artistic, musical and audiovisual material. For websites and digital products, the protectable elements and the ownership chain should be reviewed carefully because a website or platform can contain multiple different works.
The Copyright Rules provide that an application for registration is made in respect of one work. Where a project contains multiple separate works, the filing strategy should be reviewed work by work rather than assuming one application protects an entire portfolio.
The Copyright Rules contain an additional publication requirement for an applicant seeking registration of an artistic work. The exact filing steps, supporting material and current Copyright Office practice should be checked when the application is prepared.
There is no single guaranteed completion time. The Copyright Rules include an objection period, while the overall timeline can also depend on the work category, completeness of documents, ownership issues, objections, examination and current administrative processing.
The filing commonly requires applicant and author details, the title and category of the work, copies or samples of the work, ownership information and relevant supporting documents. Employment, assignment, commissioning or collaboration documents may also be important where ownership is not straightforward.
The term depends on the category of work. For many published literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works other than photographs, the Copyright Ordinance provides protection for the life of the author plus fifty years calculated from the beginning of the calendar year following the year of death. Other categories can follow different rules.
Registration is not generally what creates copyright. An infringement assessment should instead consider whether copyright subsists, who owns it, what was copied, available evidence, applicable exceptions and the remedy sought. Registration can nevertheless strengthen the evidentiary record.
