What Is NTN Registration in Pakistan?
NTN means National Tax Number. It is part of the Federal Board of Revenue's taxpayer-registration system and is connected with access to FBR Iris, Pakistan's online income-tax portal.
FBR states that an individual, company, Association of Persons (AOP) or foreign national is treated as registered when e-enrolled with FBR. E-enrollment provides the taxpayer with an NTN or Registration Number and access credentials for Iris.
Important distinction: For a Pakistani individual, the 13-digit CNIC is used as the NTN or Registration Number. A company or AOP receives a separate 7-digit NTN. This is why a director's personal CNIC-based tax registration is not the same as the company's NTN.
Who May Need an NTN in Pakistan?
NTN registration can be relevant to individuals, businesses and entities that need to register with FBR, file income tax returns, maintain a company tax profile or complete commercial, banking, regulatory or contractual requirements.
- Individuals starting business or professional activity
- Freelancers, consultants and self-employed persons
- Private limited companies and Single Member Companies
- Associations of Persons (AOPs), partnerships and firms
- Ecommerce and digital businesses
- Importers, exporters and businesses preparing for additional tax registrations
- Overseas Pakistanis with Pakistan-source business or company requirements
- Foreign nationals requiring Pakistan tax registration
- Non-resident companies with or without a permanent establishment in Pakistan
If your first step is incorporation rather than tax registration, review our Company Registration in Pakistan service.
NTN for Individuals, Companies and AOPs
NTN Registration for Individuals
For a Pakistani individual, FBR uses the person's 13-digit CNIC as the NTN or Registration Number. The individual still needs proper FBR registration and Iris access before filing an income tax return through Iris.
FBR currently allows online registration through Iris for individuals. The applicant should prepare the required identity, contact, bank and business information before starting.
NTN Registration for a Company
A company has its own tax identity. FBR states that a company receives a 7-digit NTN. This company NTN is separate from the CNIC-based registration numbers of its directors and shareholders.
For newly incorporated companies, SECP states that company incorporation data is integrated with FBR for NTN registration. Information submitted during incorporation is forwarded to FBR, and NTN is issued where the information is complete and accurate.
If you are forming a company now, compare: Private Limited Company Registration and Single Member Company Registration .
NTN Registration for AOP / Partnership
An Association of Persons also receives a separate 7-digit NTN. FBR's published requirements for AOP registration can include partnership or registration documents, member or partner details, authorization, bank information and business-premises evidence, depending on the registration route.
NTN Registration Requirements and Documents
The exact NTN registration requirements depend on whether the taxpayer is an individual, company, AOP, foreign national or non-resident company. Information should match the applicant's legal and business records.
Common Requirements for an Individual
- CNIC, NICOP or passport information as applicable
- Active mobile number and email address
- Nationality and residential address
- Accounting period
- Business name and business address where business income applies
- Principal business activity
- Bank-account information and supporting evidence where required
- Business-premises evidence and utility information where applicable
Common Requirements for a Company
- Company legal name and business name
- SECP incorporation details and incorporation certificate
- Business and registered-office address
- Accounting period and principal business activity
- Principal officer details
- Director or shareholder information where required
- Company email, phone and relevant contact details
- Bank-account information and business-premises evidence where applicable
FBR's current list of pre-registration information is available at FBR – Requirements Before Income Tax Registration .
Online NTN Registration Through FBR Iris
"Online NTN registration" is a common search term, but the correct process depends on taxpayer type. FBR's current published procedure states that online registration through Iris is available for individuals, while AOP and company registration can follow different procedures.
Step 1: Prepare the Registration Information
Review the applicant's identity, email, mobile, address, bank, principal business activity and business-premises information before beginning the registration process.
Step 2: Access FBR Iris
Use the official FBR Iris portal for online taxpayer registration and income-tax filing services.
Step 3: Complete the Correct Registration Route
Enter the required particulars carefully. The registration should match the person's actual identity, legal business name, business address and principal activity. Incorrect classification can cause later issues when filing returns, obtaining registrations or dealing with banks and government authorities.
Step 4: Secure Iris Access and Registration Details
Keep the taxpayer's registration number, login credentials, registered email and mobile information secure. FBR uses Iris for online income tax return filing and taxpayer correspondence.
If the taxpayer already has an NTN or Registration Number but cannot access Iris, FBR's return-filing guidance refers to e-enrollment for a registered person as the route for obtaining Iris access.
Company NTN After SECP Incorporation
A newly incorporated company should not assume that the director's personal NTN covers the business. The company is a separate taxpayer and should have its own company tax-registration record.
SECP's current incorporation FAQs confirm that SECP data is integrated with FBR for NTN registration. The incorporation information supplied by the applicant is forwarded to FBR and the NTN is issued if complete and accurate information has been provided.
- Confirm that the company NTN has actually been issued
- Check the company name and registration particulars for accuracy
- Confirm the principal officer and contact information
- Secure company Iris access and credentials
- Review the principal business activity
- Prepare for income tax return and record-keeping obligations
- Check whether sales tax registration is separately required
If company data or business objects need to be reviewed at the incorporation stage, see our Company Registration Procedure and Memorandum & Articles of Association pages.
NTN Verification and FBR Taxpayer Status Check
After registration, the taxpayer should verify the registration details through official FBR channels instead of relying on third-party screenshots or unofficial databases.
- Confirm the taxpayer name and registration number
- Check the company or AOP's 7-digit NTN
- Review the taxpayer's registered business particulars
- Check Active Taxpayer List status separately
- Keep evidence of the current registration record for business use

NTN vs Filer Status vs Active Taxpayer List (ATL)
NTN registration and Active Taxpayer List status are related but they are not the same thing.
NTN / Registration
NTN registration creates or confirms the person's FBR taxpayer registration and provides access to the Iris system.
Active Taxpayer List (ATL)
FBR describes ATL as a record connected with online income tax return filers. A taxpayer with an NTN may still need to file the relevant income tax return and satisfy current ATL rules to appear as an active taxpayer.
FBR states that company and AOP ATL status can also be checked by SMS using the 7-digit NTN. Current ATL files and status guidance are available through the official FBR Active Taxpayer List .
Practical point: "I have an NTN" does not automatically mean "I am currently on ATL." Registration and return-filing status should be checked separately.
NTN Registration for Overseas Pakistanis
Pakistan tax-registration matters often arise while the owner, director or investor is living abroad. Overseas Pakistanis in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Europe and other jurisdictions may still need Pakistan NTN, company tax-registration or Iris support where they have a Pakistan business, company or other relevant tax connection.
FBR's published registration information includes CNIC, NICOP and passport within the identity information relevant to individual e-enrollment, depending on the case.
- Review whether registration is personal, company-based or AOP-based
- Check NICOP, CNIC or passport details before filing
- Confirm Pakistan and overseas contact information
- Review business and company documents before FBR registration
- Coordinate company incorporation and NTN where a new business is being formed
- Prepare authorization and supporting documents where a representative is required

NTN for a Non-Resident or Foreign Company in Pakistan
FBR publishes separate registration particulars for non-resident companies with a permanent establishment in Pakistan and for non-resident companies that do not have a permanent establishment in Pakistan.
Non-Resident Company With a Permanent Establishment
FBR's published requirements can include the company name, business address, accounting period, principal business activity, principal place of business, SECP branch registration information, and principal officer or authorized representative details.
Non-Resident Company Without a Permanent Establishment
FBR's published requirements can include the foreign business address, directors or trustees, accounting period, authorized representative details, principal business activity and tax or incorporation documents from the relevant foreign authority.
If foreign documents, powers, resolutions or supporting papers need to be prepared for use in Pakistan, review our Legal Document Preparation for Overseas Pakistanis service.
International targeting on this page relates to Pakistan tax registration. It does not mean that A.A. Dewan & Co. is providing tax registration in the foreign country itself.
Does NTN Registration Include Sales Tax Registration?
No. Income tax registration / NTN and sales tax registration are different compliance matters. A business may have an NTN but still need separate sales tax registration if its activity falls within the applicable federal or provincial sales tax rules.
Before registering for sales tax, the business should review its activity, turnover, location and the authority responsible for the relevant supply or service.
For the next step, see our Sales Tax Registration in Pakistan page.
What Happens After NTN Registration?
Getting an NTN is the beginning of the tax-registration relationship, not the end of compliance. The next obligations depend on the taxpayer's income, business structure and applicable tax laws.
- Secure and test FBR Iris access
- Review registered address and principal business activity
- Maintain accounting and supporting business records
- File income tax returns where required
- Check ATL status after the relevant return filing
- Update FBR registration particulars when material information changes
- Review sales tax or other registrations where applicable
FBR's official return-filing guidance is available at File Income Tax Return through Iris .
NTN Registration Time and Cost in Pakistan
There is no single guaranteed processing time for every NTN case. The timeline can depend on taxpayer type, the registration route, completeness of data, SECP-FBR integration for companies, verification requirements and whether FBR requests correction or additional information.
Professional service fees can also depend on whether the work involves a simple individual registration, company tax-profile correction, overseas documentation, AOP registration or a non-resident company.
Avoid relying on old fixed "same-day NTN" claims without checking the current route. FBR systems and taxpayer requirements can change, and company/AOP cases do not necessarily follow the same online registration path as individuals.
Common NTN Registration Mistakes
- Confusing an individual's CNIC-based NTN with the company's separate NTN
- Assuming every taxpayer type can use exactly the same online registration route
- Entering an incorrect principal business activity
- Using outdated email, mobile, address or bank information
- Mismatch between SECP company records and FBR taxpayer information
- Failing to secure Iris credentials after registration
- Assuming NTN registration automatically creates ATL / filer status
- Ignoring separate sales tax registration requirements
- Using incomplete foreign-company or overseas authorization documents
Official FBR Resources for NTN Registration
Use official FBR and SECP sources to confirm current registration, Iris, verification and company-integration requirements.

FAQs About NTN Registration in Pakistan
What is an NTN in Pakistan?
NTN means National Tax Number. FBR uses NTN or Registration Number to identify registered taxpayers. For an individual Pakistani taxpayer, the 13-digit CNIC is used as the NTN or Registration Number. For a company or AOP, FBR issues a 7-digit NTN after registration.
How can I register for an NTN online in Pakistan?
FBR currently provides online registration through Iris for individuals. The applicant needs the required identity, contact, bank and business information. Company and AOP registration follows a different process, while newly incorporated SECP companies can receive NTN through the SECP-FBR integrated incorporation system when complete and accurate information is supplied.
Does a private limited company need a separate NTN?
Yes. A company has its own tax registration and 7-digit NTN. It is separate from the CNIC-based registration numbers of its directors and shareholders.
Does SECP automatically issue NTN after company incorporation?
SECP states that company incorporation data is integrated with FBR for NTN registration. The information entered during incorporation is forwarded to FBR, and NTN is issued by FBR when the required information is complete and accurate.
Can an overseas Pakistani get an NTN in Pakistan?
Yes. FBR registration requirements can accommodate CNIC, NICOP or passport information depending on the applicant. The correct route depends on whether the person is registering as an individual, owns a Pakistan company, represents an AOP, or is connected with a non-resident company.
Can a non-resident foreign company obtain an NTN in Pakistan?
FBR publishes separate registration particulars for non-resident companies with a permanent establishment in Pakistan and for non-resident companies without a permanent establishment. These can include company details, foreign incorporation or tax documents, principal business activity and authorized representative information.
What documents are required for NTN registration?
Requirements depend on taxpayer type. Common information can include CNIC, NICOP or passport, active email and mobile details, address, bank information, principal business activity and business premises details. Companies and AOPs require additional entity, principal officer, member or director and registration documents.
Is NTN registration the same as becoming a filer or appearing on ATL?
No. NTN registration creates the taxpayer registration and Iris access. Active Taxpayer List status is connected with income tax return filing and the applicable ATL rules. A person can therefore have an NTN but still need to file the relevant return to obtain or maintain active taxpayer status.
How can I verify an NTN or active taxpayer status?
FBR provides online verification and Active Taxpayer List services. For company and AOP ATL status, FBR also publishes an SMS method using the 7-digit NTN. Always use official FBR verification channels.
How long does NTN registration take in Pakistan?
There is no single guaranteed processing time for every case. Timing depends on the taxpayer type, registration route, accuracy of information, verification, FBR or SECP integration, and whether correction or additional documents are required.
This page provides general information. FBR registration, Iris procedures, tax rules and verification methods can change. The current official position and the applicant's facts should be checked before filing.
